[Financial News] Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited Nodeul Island’s waterfront cultural space on the 9th to inspect its facilities and user environment ahead of its opening to the public. Through the “Nodeul Global Art Island” project, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is transforming the entire island into a cultural and artistic space combining exhibitions, performances and relaxation. The waterfront cultural space, which will open on the 18th, has been renovated with improvements to aging walkways and waterfront areas so that citizens can use it more safely and comfortably.
Oh Se-hoon checked the play garden’s flooring, the stability of its play equipment, the installation of benches, and whether there were any problems with media facilities and beam projectors.
The overall design of Nodeul Global Art Island was undertaken by architect Thomas Alexander Heatherwick, who designed London’s Rolling Bridge and New York’s Little Island and Vessel.
The project will add a play garden, an ecological garden and new media facilities. In particular, concrete-paved areas will be converted into green spaces, increasing the total green area by 3,380 square meters, or 8%. About 130,000 flowering plants that harmonize with the Hangang River ecosystem have also been planted. A water garden and an elevated pedestrian walkway will be developed in the future.
Oh Se-hoon said, "With the opening of the waterfront cultural space and the development of facilities such as the elevated pedestrian walkway, which is scheduled to begin construction in December, Nodeul Island will be transformed into a cultural and artistic space encompassing the ground, waterfront and air." He added, "Please thoroughly improve safety and convenience facilities before the opening so that citizens can use the waterfront cultural space, which is being opened ahead of schedule, safely and conveniently."
