Gangwon State, KEPCO to Expand Power Infrastructure for AI Data Center

【Financial News Chuncheon = Reporter Kim Ki-seop】Gangwon State has joined hands with Korea Electric Power Corporation to resolve the power supply issue, the biggest obstacle to attracting AI data centers.
According to Gangwon State on the 9th, Gangwon State and KEPCO signed an MOU that day to successfully develop the Gangwon AI Data Center. Woo Sang-ho, governor of Gangwon State, and Kim Dong-cheol, president of KEPCO, attended the signing ceremony.
The agreement was established to strengthen cooperation in attracting the Gangwon AI Data Center and building a national backbone power grid, in line with the government's efforts to enhance the competitiveness of the AI industry and promote balanced regional development.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will cooperate on expanding power infrastructure for the AI Data Center and building a national backbone power grid to ensure a stable power supply. Their cooperation will include permits and approvals, consultations with relevant organizations, improving public acceptance, and establishing and operating a working-level consultative body. KEPCO said it plans to expand the power grid proactively to promote balanced regional development and implement the principle of generating and consuming electricity locally.
AI data centers, which require ultrafast, high-capacity data processing, consume enormous amounts of electricity, making a stable power grid crucial to the success of their operations. Through the agreement, Gangwon State will address the power supply issue proactively and provide full support for KEPCO's infrastructure construction.
Having secured a favorable position in obtaining large-scale power infrastructure, Gangwon State also plans to accelerate efforts to attract data centers, using its cooperation with KEPCO as a foundation.
Woo Sang-ho, governor of Gangwon State, said, "We will mobilize all available administrative support, from permits and approvals to communication with residents, to help ensure that the power infrastructure is expanded on schedule." He added, "By combining Gangwon State's administrative capabilities with KEPCO's technical expertise, we will make Gangwon the leading AI industry hub in South Korea."
