Mother Lied That Her Daughter Was Adopted After Remarrying... Uncle Considers Reporting Her for Child Abuse

According to JTBC’s “Scandal Supervisor” on the 9th, Informant A’s younger sister married in her early 20s and gave birth to a daughter. However, her husband died of a chronic illness soon afterward. After returning to her parents’ home with her young daughter, she left the child in her parents’ care and took little part in raising her.
According to A, his younger sister rarely came home. A, the girl’s uncle, usually attended events such as his niece’s daycare performances. When the younger sister came home drunk, she found it bothersome even when her daughter ran to greet her and would not hug her. On one occasion, she allegedly pushed the girl away when the child tried to hug her, causing her to fall.
Before remarrying, the younger sister told her family that she would leave her daughter at her parents’ home. She asked them not to mention the girl, saying that she would explain everything to her new husband herself.
A and his parents thought the younger sister would bring her first daughter home after settling into her new family. However, she reportedly became less communicative after remarrying. She had two more children with her new husband, while her first daughter, who was raised by her maternal grandmother, became a middle school student.
A later learned that his younger sister had been telling her new husband that her first daughter was an adopted child. During a drinking session, A’s brother-in-law told him that the girl increasingly resembled his wife and asked, “Was she really adopted?”
The younger sister reportedly told her husband that she had met a child who touched her heart while volunteering at an orphanage, adopted the child, and registered her as a member of her family.
A visited his younger sister that night and asked her about what had happened, but she reportedly refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing. A’s brother-in-law suggested bringing the first daughter into their home so she could live with her siblings, but the younger sister rejected the proposal.
The first daughter also learned only later that her mother had deceived her by claiming she was adopted. When the daughter asked, “How could you do this?” the younger sister allegedly slapped her instead of apologizing, A claimed.
A said on “Scandal Supervisor” that he was considering reporting the matter as child abuse. “After seeing her even hit her daughter, I felt I could no longer stand by and am considering reporting her for child abuse,” he said. “However, my family members are trying to stop me, saying, ‘She did something wrong, but does it really have to go that far?’ I’m struggling with how to respond.”
A lawyer who heard the story on the program pointed out that both neglect and assault could raise legal issues. “Not only the act of slapping her daughter but also the neglect could constitute a crime, so appropriate accountability should be pursued,” the lawyer said. Another panelist said, “The child’s psychological stability must come first,” adding, “The response should be guided by the child’s feelings and wishes, rather than the uncle’s anger.”
