Daegu Metropolitan City Launches Major Initiative to Train Talent for Future Strategic Industries

【Financial News Daegu = Kim Jang-wook, Reporter】Daegu Metropolitan City is launching a major initiative to train talent for future strategic industries.
Daegu Metropolitan City announced that two of the six projects selected nationwide in the Ministry of Education’s “Super-Regional Growth Engine Talent Development” program, in which the city participated, have been chosen as final projects. The city secured up to 32.8 billion won in national funding over the next four years.
The program, led by the Ministry of Education, brings together local governments, universities and companies across city and provincial boundaries to jointly train the talent needed for growth-engine industries in each region. It is also designed to promote industrial growth and encourage young people to settle in their local communities.
Daegu Metropolitan City was selected for two of the six projects chosen nationwide by the Ministry of Education. As a result, it has secured a foundation for super-regional talent development in key future industries, including robotics, semiconductors and advanced biotechnology.
Kim Tae-woon, head of the AI Innovation and Growth Office, emphasized, “Daegu’s selection for two of the six projects nationwide is a meaningful achievement that will raise the competitiveness of Daegu’s future industries and the talent-development capabilities of its local universities to the next level.”
He added, “Based on super-regional cooperation, including between the Daegu–Gyeongbuk region, we will systematically train outstanding talent in future industries and actively support them so they can find jobs or launch businesses at local companies and establish themselves as key talent driving regional growth.”
The project in the Daegu–Gyeongsangbuk-do region focuses on robotics and semiconductors. Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government is participating, with Kumoh National Institute of Technology (KIT) serving as the lead institution. From Daegu, Keimyung University, Yeungnam University College and Yeungjin University are also participating.
The project will bring together the robotics and semiconductor industrial base and the universities’ educational and research capabilities to train specialized talent tailored to corporate demand in advanced semiconductor materials and components, as well as AI manufacturing robots. It will systematically develop the practical and research personnel needed at industrial sites through joint courses and field training.
The “AI-Based Advanced Biotechnology” project is a super-regional cooperation initiative led by South Chungcheong Province, with Daegu and Gyeonggi Province participating. Dankook University will serve as the lead university, while Keimyung University will participate from Daegu.
The project will link the participating regions’ university, medical and biotechnology infrastructure, including South Chungcheong Province’s capabilities in process development and manufacturing demonstration, Daegu’s capabilities in clinical demonstration and regulatory science, and Gyeonggi Province’s capabilities in scale-up, AI and data. The regions will jointly train advanced biotechnology specialists who combine AI and biotechnology, while establishing a practice-oriented, super-regional talent-development system connecting education and research with corporate worksites.
With the selection of the two projects, Daegu Metropolitan City has secured a total of 32.8 billion won in national funding over the next four years. The city expects this to strengthen the educational and research capabilities of local universities and expand the foundation for steadily supplying local companies with the key talent needed for future industries.
