'Embrace the Moonlight, Taste Gizzard Shad'... Boseong County to Hold Gizzard Shad Festival at Yulpo Solbat Beach on Sept. 24–25

【Financial News Boseong = Hwang Tae-jong】The Boseong Gizzard Shad Festival will be held on Sept. 24–25 during the Chuseok holiday around Yulpo Solbat Beach in Hoecheon-myeon, Boseong County. Visitors will be able to catch and taste Boseong’s signature autumn delicacy, gizzard shad.
Now in its 18th year, the Boseong Gizzard Shad Festival is themed “Embrace the Moonlight, Taste Gizzard Shad.” It will offer returning visitors and tourists a variety of experiences and performances featuring seasonal gizzard shad and the autumn sea at Yulpo. The festival is hosted and organized by the Hoecheon-myeon Youth Association and the Boseong Gizzard Shad Festival Organizing Committee.
O Yeong Il, co-chair of the Boseong Gizzard Shad Festival Organizing Committee, said, “Together with the Hoecheon-myeon Youth Association, we are doing our best to make this a rich festival featuring a variety of experiences, performances and food.” He added, “In particular, we will ensure that families can enjoy seasonal gizzard shad and the autumn sea at Yulpo together during the Chuseok holiday.”
According to Boseong County, the festival’s signature program, a “gizzard shad and live-fish catching experience,” will be held on both Sept. 24 and 25. Starting at 1 p.m. each day, on-site registration will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis for 50 adults and 50 children. The participation fee is 15,000 won per person, while preschool children can participate free of charge. Participants will receive a sports towel.
A “gizzard shad grilling experience” will also allow participants to grill and eat the fish they catch. The fee is 10,000 won, and grilling plates, charcoal, utensils and tools will be provided.
On the first day, Sept. 24, a Tourist Harmony Festival, a performance by the Boseong County Traditional Korean Music Troupe, the opening ceremony, the Boseong Gizzard Shad Festival Singing Contest and a prize drawing will take place from 3 p.m. A total of 20 contestants, including participants from towns and villages, will compete in the singing contest for a total of 2 million won in prize money, including 1 million won for the grand prize. Prizes worth a total of 4 million won will also be prepared for tourists. Through a drawing, winners will receive prizes worth 1 million won for first place, 600,000 won for second place and 400,000 won for third place, among others.
A Tourist Harmony Festival will also be held on the second day, Sept. 25.
Food booths featuring local agricultural and marine products, including spicy gizzard shad sashimi salad, Hoecheon scallion pancakes, scallion kimchi, and steamed potatoes and corn, will also operate alongside spaces selling local specialties.
