KEPCO, PetroVietnam Discuss Cooperation on Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project During Seoul Visit

【HANOI, Vietnam—Correspondent Kim Jun-seok】Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and PetroVietnam, Vietnam’s state-owned industrial and energy group, held talks in Seoul to discuss the prompt implementation of their nuclear power cooperation agreement and plans to advance the partnership.
According to KEPCO and other sources on the 9th, KEPCO President Kim Dong-cheol met with PetroVietnam President Le Manh Cuong in Seoul on the 8th. Kim praised the information shared by PetroVietnam and said, "I hope to jointly study efficient ways to advance the Ninh Thuan 2 Nuclear Power Project with PetroVietnam."
Kim also shared KEPCO’s experience in constructing the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He emphasized that long-term cooperation and trust between partners, along with strong project execution capabilities, are essential to the success of large-scale nuclear power projects.
Earlier, PetroVietnam President Cuong explained that Vietnam was carrying out the necessary preparations and procedures to pursue nuclear power projects. He added, "The signing of a cooperation agreement between KEPCO and PetroVietnam in the presence of the leaders and senior officials of both countries demonstrates that nuclear power is emerging as a highly promising area of cooperation between South Korea and Vietnam."
Cuong said PetroVietnam had been designated as the investor in Vietnam’s Ninh Thuan 2 Nuclear Power Project. He added that site clearance was 97.5% complete and that the remaining work was expected to be finished soon. This is expected to provide an important foundation for accelerating the project’s future implementation.
Cuong also said, "The Vietnamese government is strongly directing the advancement of the nuclear power project." He added, "PetroVietnam hopes to establish an effective, rapidly executable cooperation plan with a capable partner and report it to the governments of both countries for review."
At the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue reviewing cooperation in the technical, investment, and financial aspects of the nuclear power project, strengthen the exchange of views, and expand cooperation to secure support from relevant agencies in both countries.
