[Financial News] A warning has been issued that sea levels along California’s coast on the U.S. West Coast could rise by more than 30 centimeters by mid-next month under the influence of El Niño in the eastern Pacific.
On the 8th, local time, CNN reported that oceanography researchers at North Carolina State University said, "A massive body of seawater known as a coastal Kelvin wave is moving north toward the U.S. West Coast from offshore Mexico at a speed of about 10 kilometers per hour." This invisible giant wave is the first physical sign of the current El Niño’s impact on the Americas. Combined with rising sea levels caused by global warming, it has raised concerns about extensive flooding in coastal areas.
Experts warned that communities along the densely populated U.S. West Coast could suffer major damage, as even a 5-centimeter rise in sea levels doubles the risk of flooding. The El Niño, forecast to be the strongest on record, could raise water levels by up to 35 centimeters above normal if the rise caused by the Kelvin wave coincides with seawater expansion and winter storms.
U.S. authorities are urging coastal residents and local governments to strengthen their flood preparations as they closely monitor the approaching giant wave’s potential impact.
