[Financial News] Kakao Pay has completed the development and verification of integrated wallet technology capable of holding digital assets, including stablecoins. Based on this, Kakao Group plans to supply wallet solutions to the domestic digital asset market and build a stablecoin distribution infrastructure by linking it with regulatory compliance consulting.
Kakao Pay announced on the 9th that it has completed a proof of concept (PoC) to expand its existing prepaid wallet system into a digital asset wallet capable of accommodating on-chain assets.
The core of this PoC is to connect blockchain-based assets, such as stablecoins, to the existing wallet infrastructure that has been operating around Kakao Pay Money. Based on Kakao Pay's payment ecosystem, which has secured approximately 43 million users, the remittance, payment, and settlement functions for digital assets were verified, and a user interface was also built.
Following Kakao Pay, wallet technology verification is also underway at KakaoBank Corp. KakaoBank Corp is checking the stability and usability of the wallet integration process by applying the security levels and regulatory requirements demanded by the banking industry.
Kakao Group plans to expand the scope of application in the digital asset distribution sector by verifying its technology across different financial infrastructures, namely payment platforms and banks.
Plans are also being pursued to supply verified wallet technology to external companies and financial institutions. The plan is to provide support for the construction and operation of wallet infrastructure tailored to the specific requirements of each business operator as the systems and regulatory framework for stablecoins become more concrete.
In particular, the strategy is to reduce the burden of infrastructure adoption and operational risks for companies through a packaged service that combines technology supply and consulting. Reflecting the domestic regulatory environment and market characteristics, the plan is to provide both wallet building technology and know-how for regulatory compliance.
Kakao Group is also continuing discussions on cooperation with major domestic companies and financial institutions considering entering the digital asset business, including Korean won-based stablecoins.
Shin Won-geun, CEO of Kakao Pay and Co-Head of the Group's Stablecoin Task Force, stated, "The true value of digital assets, such as stablecoins, will be revealed beyond issuance in the distribution stage where the assets are actually used." He added, "Leveraging Kakao Group's vast distribution potential, we will continuously demonstrate leadership in infrastructure technologies like wallets and regulatory adaptation know-how, and together with various partners, we will lead the establishment and revitalization of the domestic digital asset ecosystem."
