Magnitude 2.3 Earthquake Strikes Haenam County in Jeonnam-Gwangju; Korean Meteorological Administration Says “No Damage Expected”

A magnitude 2.3 earthquake struck Haenam County in Jeonnam-Gwangju on the morning of the 9th. The quake occurred nine days after a magnitude 2.7 earthquake hit the Haenam area on the 31st of last month, where earthquakes have recently occurred in succession.
According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, the magnitude 2.3 earthquake occurred at 9:04:05 a.m. on the 9th in an area 20 kilometers west-northwest of Haenam County, Jeonnam-Gwangju. The epicenter was located at 34.66 degrees north latitude and 126.41 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 21 kilometers.
The maximum instrumental intensity was II in Jeonnam-Gwangju. An intensity of II means that a small number of people in quiet conditions or on upper floors of buildings may feel the shaking. The Korean Meteorological Administration expected no damage from the earthquake.
The earthquake occurred in an area where seismic activity has continued since last month. According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, earthquakes have occurred around the same location in Haenam since the 14th of last month, including a magnitude 3.1 earthquake on the 23rd. By 5 p.m. on the 26th of last month, a total of 83 earthquakes had been detected, including microearthquakes below magnitude 2.0.
