Woori Financial Group-Supported “Basketball Boy” Edi Daniel Earns a Spot on South Korea’s National Team

[Financial News] Edi Daniel, the “basketball boy” supported by Woori Financial Group for three years, will compete at the Asian Games as a member of South Korea’s national team.
The Woori Multicultural Scholarship Foundation announced on the 9th that Edi Daniel, whom it has supported as a special-talent scholarship recipient since 2024, will compete at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games as a member of South Korea’s national team.
Edi Daniel, who currently plays for the Seoul SK Knights, has earned recognition for his ability by becoming the first high school graduate to win the Korean Basketball League (KBL) Rookie Sixth Man Award. The award is given to a player who delivers an outstanding performance after entering a game as a substitute rather than one of the five starters. The Woori Multicultural Scholarship Foundation selected him as a special-talent scholarship recipient for three consecutive years, from 2024 through this year, and has supported his journey toward becoming a member of the national team.
Lee Ji-hyun, deputy director of the Woori Multicultural Scholarship Foundation, said, “We are continuing our special-talent scholarship program so that multicultural youths like Edi Daniel can discover their talents and continue pursuing their dreams. We will also provide consistent support so that children’s potential can bear fruit in various fields, including sports.”
Other special-talent scholarship recipients supported by the Woori Multicultural Scholarship Foundation have also continued to excel. Weightlifter Kim Tae-yang won three titles and was named the Most Valuable Player at the National Men’s Weightlifting Championships, while judoka Jang Mi-reu and track-and-field athlete Song Jae-yeon won a gold medal and two titles, respectively, at the National Youth Sports Festival.
The Woori Multicultural Scholarship Foundation operates scholarship programs for multicultural students. This year, it selected 1,200 scholarship recipients and provided 2.3 billion won in scholarships. Since 2012, it has selected a total of 8,870 multicultural scholarship recipients and provided approximately 12.2 billion won in scholarships.
