Gori Nuclear Power Division Establishes Comprehensive Response System to Prevent Illegal Drone Flights

[Financial News] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP)’s Gori Nuclear Power Division said on the 9th that it will strengthen cooperation with relevant agencies and launch a public awareness campaign regarding unauthorized drone flights in no-fly zones, in line with the revised Aviation Safety Act taking effect on the 17th.
Nuclear power plants are designated as Class ‘A’ national security facilities, making the area within a 18.5-kilometer radius a no-fly zone. Prior approval is required to fly a drone within the zone.
Under the revised Aviation Safety Act, flying a drone or other ultralight flight device in a no-fly zone without approval will result in tougher penalties, increasing from the current administrative fine of up to 3 million won to up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.
Accordingly, the Gori Nuclear Power Division plans to share the revised provisions with relevant agencies, including the police, military, and local governments, and strengthen its cooperation system so that on-site measures can be taken swiftly when an illegal drone is detected.
It also plans to install signs and distribute promotional materials outlining the revised penalties in areas around the nuclear power plant where drone flights are a concern, while conducting public awareness campaigns through various media, including its website.
Ban Byeong-hun, head of the Gori Nuclear Power Division, said, "Areas around nuclear power plants are subject to strict restrictions on drone flights to protect the security and safety of nationally important facilities. Drone operators are urged to take special care to check whether flights are permitted and whether approval is required before flying, so they do not suffer any disadvantages."
