Jeju’s Eastern Area Faces Strong-Wind Advisory This Afternoon; Coastal Waves Could Reach 5 Meters

【Financial News Jeju=Yong-bok Jeong】 The possibility of a strong-wind advisory being issued for eastern Jeju Island this afternoon is increasing, and waves in coastal waters could reach up to 5 meters. Powerful swells are also expected to push toward the coast, prompting calls for caution from air and maritime travelers as well as coastal visitors.
According to the Jeju Regional Meteorological Office on the 9th, Jeju Island will see occasional clouds, while mountainous areas and the eastern part of Hallasan will be generally cloudy.
From morning through midday, some areas—particularly the mountains and the eastern part of Hallasan—may receive less than 0.1 millimeters of drizzle. No significant rainfall is expected, but roads may become slippery where drizzle occurs.
The greater concerns are the wind and sea conditions. The Korean Meteorological Administration has issued preliminary strong-wind advisories for eastern Jeju City and eastern Seogwipo City for this afternoon. Winds are expected to become very strong in eastern Jeju Island from the afternoon, raising the possibility that a strong-wind advisory will be issued.
Across Jeju Island, some areas may experience gusts of around 15 meters per second, while mountainous areas could see gusts of around 20 meters per second. People should secure facilities such as signs and greenhouses and take care while walking or driving because of falling objects.
Strong winds could also disrupt aircraft operations. As wind-related delays or disruptions are possible, the Korean Meteorological Administration urged airport users to check their flight status before departure.
Sea conditions will be rougher. As of 6 a.m. on the 9th, high-wave advisories were in effect for the outer southern waters and the inner southeastern waters off Jeju Island. High-wave advisories may be issued in the morning for the eastern and southern coastal waters of Jeju Island and the inner southwestern waters, and in the afternoon for the northern and western coastal waters.
In the waters off Jeju Island, strong northeast to easterly winds of 9–18 meters per second are expected, with waves reaching 1.5–5.0 meters. Particularly in the eastern and southern coastal waters, waves as high as 5 meters are forecast from this afternoon through the morning of the 10th.
High waves are also a threat along the coast. Powerful swells are expected to continue reaching the shores of Jeju Island for the time being, with high waves surging onto beaches and, in some places, overtopping rocky shores and breakwaters. Extra caution is needed when visiting coastal areas for activities such as fishing or seaside walks.
Daytime temperatures will be similar to seasonal averages. The daytime high across Jeju Island is expected to be 28–29°C on the 9th. Temperatures will rise to around 29°C in Jeju City and Seogwipo City and around 28°C in Seongsan.
On the 10th, skies will remain occasionally cloudy. The morning low is forecast at 22°C, with daytime highs of 27–28°C. Strong winds will continue in some areas, particularly in southern regions and across Jeju Island.
The Korean Meteorological Administration said high waves in the waters around Jeju Island and coastal swells are expected to continue for the time being, urging people to check the latest advisories and transportation information regularly.
