[Financial News] Actress Go Eun-ah recently revealed without reservation on her YouTube channel that she weighed 60.9 kg and had abdominal obesity. She then drew attention by announcing that she had lost 3.3 kg in 13 days, bringing her weight down to 57.6 kg. Although her arms and legs are thin, her abdomen is noticeably protruding. Go Eun-ah expressed concern about visceral fat, saying, "I don't eat snacks and I like vegetables, but it's all a drinking belly."
Like Go Eun-ah, many modern people are concerned about so-called “normal-weight obesity (visceral-fat-type obesity),” in which they appear thin but accumulate fat mainly around the abdomen.
Why does visceral fat, known as a “drinking belly,” accumulate only around the abdomen?
Alcohol provides 7 kcal per gram but is a “source of empty calories” with no nutrients. Once it enters the body, it is burned as an energy source before other nutrients, promoting the synthesis of fat from food consumed alongside it. In particular, the cortisol hormone released when drinking tends to cause fat to accumulate around the abdominal organs rather than in the extremities.
Unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat is located between the organs, where it releases inflammatory substances and increases insulin resistance. This significantly raises the risk of metabolic syndrome, including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and fatty liver disease. For that reason, managing it is essential not merely for cosmetic purposes but also for overall health.
"3.3 kg in 13 days"...The pitfalls of ultra-short-term dieting
Go Eun-ah achieved rapid weight loss in less than two weeks by combining home workouts, such as riding an indoor bicycle, with strict dietary management. However, experts unanimously warn that losing weight so rapidly over an excessively short period can cause various side effects and requires particular caution.
A substantial portion of the weight lost through ultra-short-term dieting is likely to be water and muscle rather than actual fat. When muscle mass drops sharply, the basal metabolic rate—the minimum amount of energy the body uses to sustain vital functions—also declines. This can lead to the yo-yo effect, in which people gain weight more easily after returning to their usual diet. In addition, severely restricting food intake for a short period can cause deficiencies in essential micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. This may weaken the immune system and bring on signs of aging, including hair loss and sagging skin.
Accordingly, health authorities and medical professionals recommend gradually losing weight rather than pursuing an excessive short-term reduction. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s National Health Information Portal, healthy weight management calls for a moderate dietary reduction of about 300–500 kcal from the recommended daily energy intake appropriate for one’s activity level. Gradually losing around 1.5–2 kg per month in this way is key to minimizing muscle loss and maintaining the reduced weight over the long term.
To effectively improve abdominal obesity, it is especially important to correct overall lifestyle habits as well. The first priority is to reduce the frequency and amount of alcohol consumed, as drinking is a major cause of abdominal fat accumulation. When drinking is unavoidable, people should drink water frequently to dilute the alcohol concentration in the body. As for diet, they should avoid meals centered on refined carbohydrates and consume sufficient high-quality protein, such as chicken breast, tofu, and fish, to prevent muscle loss, along with fiber-rich vegetables and seaweed that help eliminate visceral fat.
In addition, aerobic exercise such as riding an indoor bicycle should be used to actively burn body fat, while lower-body strength exercises that stimulate large muscle groups, such as squats and lunges, should be performed consistently. This helps preserve the basal metabolic rate and build a firm physique.
