Content media group Next Entertainment World (NEW) announced on the 8th that the Indonesian sequel based on the 2013 release 'Miracle in Cell No. 7' will be remade into the Philippine film 'Second Miracle in Cell No. 7'.
'Miracle in Cell No. 7' has been remade in Indonesia, Türkiye, and the Philippines. In particular, the Philippine version was a box office success, recording local theater revenue of over 11 billion won upon its release in 2019. Subsequently, an original sequel based on the original was produced in Indonesia, and now the rights to that sequel have been exported to the Philippines to be adapted into a film again.
This case is significant in that the original IP did not stop at a one-off remake for each country, but was instead expanded with a new story locally and distributed to other nations. NEW, the owner of the source IP, also secured additional revenue through the Philippine remake of the Indonesian sequel.
The Philippine sequel features the same production team from the first film. Philippine studio Viva Films is producing the film, and actor Aga Mulak and director Nuel C. Naval are returning from the first movie. The film is scheduled to be released across the Philippines on December 25.
Lee Jung-ha, CEO of Contents Panda, stated, "The remake of the movie 'Miracle in Cell No. 7' has established itself as a cultural asset that permeates Southeast Asia," adding, "We will actively explore sustainable franchise revenue structures in the global market."
Meanwhile, in addition to Indonesia and the Philippines, NEW is also expanding its content business in Southeast Asia, using Vietnam as a base. Its affiliate, Contents Panda, participated in the co-production and investment of "The Last Wish," a Vietnamese remake of the film "The Last Ride" distributed by NEW last year. After its release, "The Last Wish" topped the Vietnamese box office for two consecutive weeks, surpassing Hollywood films such as "Jurassic World: Rebirth" and "Superman." Contents Panda is expanding its business scope in the Vietnamese market through the localization of Korean IP and through co-production and investment.
