Alberta Health Minister Visits Wonju Medical Device Industry Promotion Agency

【Financial News Wonju-si=Kim Ki-seop】A delegation from the Alberta Department of Health in Canada visited Wonju-si to examine the foundations of its medical device and medical AI industries.
According to the Wonju Medical Device Industry Promotion Agency on the 8th, a delegation including Alberta Health Minister Justin Wright visited the Medical Device Comprehensive Support Center that day. The delegation toured key infrastructure supporting Wonju’s medical device industry and discussed potential cooperation in future healthcare sectors, including medical AI and digital healthcare. Nineteen people attended the visit, including Minister Wright, officials from the Alberta provincial government and its Korea representative office, and officials from Wonju-si and the agency.
Wonju-si and the Wonju Medical Device Industry Promotion Agency introduced the delegation to the growth of Wonju’s medical device industry over more than 30 years. They also presented an industrial ecosystem in which companies, universities, hospitals, and research-support institutions are closely connected. In addition, they shared plans to expand the existing medical device industry into a future industry centered on medical AI by incorporating artificial intelligence and digital technologies, along with infrastructure for supporting companies.
The visit also included discussions on linking Alberta’s health policies, which focus on prevention and primary care, and its data-driven healthcare system with Wonju’s medical device industry base and capabilities in medical AI and digital healthcare. Based on the industrial and healthcare capabilities of their respective regions, the two sides explored cooperation in various areas, including demonstrations and joint research involving medical AI and digital healthcare technologies, exchanges between medical device companies, and entry into global markets. The discussions are expected to lead to continued exchanges and the development of specific cooperation projects.
Kim Young-sung, head of the Wonju Medical Device Industry Promotion Agency, said, "If Wonju’s medical device industry ecosystem, built over more than 30 years, joins forces with Alberta’s outstanding healthcare system, we can create new opportunities in technology demonstrations, joint research, and cooperation between companies." He added, "We will ensure that this visit leads to practical cooperation between the two regions."
