[Financial News] Woo Sung Yoo, known as a first-generation mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, criticized a former gang member-turned-MMA fighter who became embroiled in controversy after using an MMA technique against an ordinary person.
On the 7th, Woo Sung Yoo uploaded a video to his YouTube channel titled "Why Thugs Should Not Learn Martial Arts."
Woo Sung Yoo said, "The Guillotine choke used by the fighter in question compresses the cervical vertebrae in the neck, blocking the optic nerves and carotid arteries and causing the person to lose consciousness. There are many optic nerves in the cervical vertebrae, and if something goes wrong, the neck bones could break or the nerves could be severed. It is dangerous in multiple ways."
He continued, "In the video, he held only the neck for three seconds while applying a Guillotine choke. There are several types of Guillotine chokes, but the most dangerous is the one that involves holding only the neck. It is easy to lose consciousness and easy to injure the neck." He added, "He was actually pressing down on the other person with his weight, and the other person fell backward. The ground was asphalt, too. There is no choice but to view this as a clear intent to kill."
Woo Sung Yoo criticized the incident, saying, "When demonstrating a technique on an ordinary person, you normally do not apply it all the way. You tell them to be careful and tell them to tap out. But the fighter in question slapped his opponent while telling him to die and go to sleep. First aid is important, but he left him unattended. MMA is not about playing around and tormenting your opponent, is it?"
He went on to say, "I started training when people were pointing fingers at me. After being criticized for decades, it has only been a few years since people began giving me a thumbs-up." He added, "But the days of being criticized have returned. I believe people like these thugs, gangsters, people with tattoos, and those who have served prison sentences cannot be reformed."
Woo Sung Yoo urged others, saying, "It is embarrassing in itself to be an MMA fighter from a gangster or thug background. To all the gym owners across the country, please do not teach these kinds of kids."
He also criticized subscribers who watch provocative content like the controversial YouTube broadcast, saying, "It may feel like your dopamine is surging, but you are wasting your time and money. If you do not watch, support, or donate to them, they will naturally disappear."
Meanwhile, Fighter A, a former gang member, was booked by police on the 6th on suspicion of injuring a man in his 20s, identified as B, by choking him unconscious during a YouTube livestream.
B was reportedly a viewer of the YouTube broadcast who visited the officetel after contacting the YouTuber. He is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment, and authorities understand that he has also developed paralysis in parts of his body.
Fighter A was also reportedly a member of Z-FIGHT NIGHT (ZFN), a mixed martial arts organization founded by Chan Sung Jung (The Korean Zombie). As the controversy spread, ZFN terminated its contract with Fighter A for violating its duty-to-maintain-dignity provisions.
