Konkuk University Professor Jiho Shin Demonstrates ‘Metaverse Museum’ at Busan Museum of Art

[Financial News]  Konkuk University Professor Jiho Shin of the Department of Media Acting is introducing a new way to experience museums using metaverse technology in collaboration with the Busan Museum of Art.
According to Konkuk University on the 8th, The Crossing Lab, an AI creative technology company represented by Professor Shin, will hold an on-site demonstration titled ‘Metaverse Busan Museum of Art—New Social Functions and Roles’ at the Busan Museum of Art on the 17th.
The demonstration will present the results of approximately two years of research conducted by the Busan Museum of Art and The Crossing Lab after they signed a memorandum of understanding for joint metaverse research in April 2024.
The Busan Museum of Art has been recreated in a virtual space, allowing visitors to move through it themselves and experience artworks and related content. Rather than simply viewing an exhibition online, the project applies an interactive format in which artwork information and content change according to visitors’ choices and actions.
The demonstration will feature explanations of artworks by an AI docent, a virtual concert hall and ‘My Space,’ where visitors can create their own exhibition areas. It will also showcase exploration-based content, digital puzzles and story-driven experiences that use game elements, including hidden information in the exhibition space that visitors can find to understand the context of the artworks.
The researchers are also exploring ways to improve access for people who have difficulty visiting museums by using metaverse spaces. The approach would allow visitors to access museum content regardless of location or time, expanding access to culture and the arts for people with limitations on in-person visits, including people with disabilities and older adults.
The project will also test ways for visitors to explore virtual spaces, interact with artworks and participate in collaborative creation. Through these efforts, the researchers plan to examine how metaverse technology can be used for museum exhibitions, education and communication with visitors.
Professor Shin said, "The metaverse offers the possibility of a new artistic experience because visitors can directly participate in and interact with the spaces where artworks are displayed." He added, "Through this demonstration, we will examine the roles that public museums can perform in a digital environment."
