HIRA Appoints Ajou University Professor Rae Woong Park as Chair of Medical Care Review and Assessment Committee

HIRA announced on the 8th that it will appoint Professor Rae Woong Park as the ninth chair of the Medical Care Review and Assessment Committee, effective on the 14th. His term will be two years.
The Medical Care Review and Assessment Committee deliberates and decides on matters requiring specialized medical judgment during the review of medical care benefit costs and appropriateness assessments. The chair oversees the operations of the Central Review Committee and regional review and assessment committees.
The newly appointed chair, Rae Woong Park, is an expert who has conducted research in medical data standardization, digital transformation (DX), and AI transformation (AX). He graduated from Ajou University College of Medicine, obtained his specialist qualification in pathology at Ajou University Hospital, and earned a doctorate in medicine from Chungbuk National University Graduate School.
He has been a professor in the Department of Medical Informatics at Ajou University College of Medicine since 2005. He has also served as director of the Medical Information Research Center at Ajou University Medical Center and president of the Korean Society of Medical Informatics. He has built a record of research achievements in medical AI and healthcare big data, including the establishment of a biomedical and healthcare big data research network based on the common data model (CDM).
He also served as a member of the Special Committee on Digital Healthcare under the Presidential Committee on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Special Committee on Biotechnology under the National Science and Technology Advisory Council. In those roles, he participated in discussions on healthcare data standardization, the clinical application of medical AI, and related institutional frameworks.
The newly appointed chair, Rae Woong Park, emphasized the need to establish a review and assessment system that uses data and AI.
He said, "Public trust in review and assessment begins with objective data and rigorous professional medical validity," adding, "I will establish a fair and sustainable review and assessment system based on real-world evidence (RWE) by combining reviewers’ expertise with AI analytical capabilities and reflecting the voices of healthcare professionals in the field."
HIRA President SeungKwon HONG stated, "The future of review and assessment will open when the expertise of medicine in the field works together with the analytical capabilities of advanced artificial intelligence," adding, "Together with the newly appointed chair, Rae Woong Park, I will build a review and assessment system explained through objective and scientific evidence."
