Oh Se-hoon on Demand for 'Long-term Jeonse Extension': "Unethical and Unreasonable... Other Citizens Must Have the Opportunity"

[Financial News] Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon reaffirmed his stance that demands from some long-term jeonse residents for extensions of maturity or conversion to ownership are 'unacceptable.'
Mayor Oh stated this at the 'From Long-term Jeonse to My Own Home, Seoul's Housing Ladder Hope Talk' held in the main conference room of the Seoul Metropolitan Government building on the 8th, saying, "From a critical perspective, there are parts that seem a bit forced."
Mayor Oh pointed out, "It is a bit noisy because there are people who want to continue living here even though they have been residing here for 20 years," adding, "There are also those who claim they didn't know it was 20 years when they moved in, which is a really unethical and unreasonable argument."
"So I started to look back," he said. "What was surprising was that there were far more people who voluntarily succeeded in buying their own homes and moved out before completing 20 years."
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the average length of residence for 1,708 households that vacated long-term jeonse housing between 2016 and 2021 was 8 years and 4 months, and it was found that 72% of them lived in their own homes after purchasing their own homes.
Mayor Oh reiterated, "I hope those refusing to vacate because they claim they are not ready, even though nearly 20 years have passed, will clearly understand the message," adding, "The Seoul Metropolitan Government will not make any exceptions. This is because there are too many people waiting for this."
"In addition, I want to clearly tell you, as the mayor, that since the citizens of Seoul are in a position to enjoy the same opportunities," he said. "There is talk of granting exceptions for those with truly unavoidable circumstances, but such exceptions will be recognized for only a very small number of people."
