On the 8th, Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced that it would introduce a real-time electronic Braille service on LH Cheongyak Plus, its public housing subscription platform.
When users click the “Braille Viewer” button at the top of a housing subscription notice page, the text and table data displayed on the screen are immediately converted according to Korean Braille standards.
The converted materials can be downloaded as files and transferred to users’ personal Braille information terminals. They can also be printed using a Braille printer.
Previously, people with visual impairments mainly used screen readers, which read on-screen text aloud, to check housing subscription information. However, housing subscription notices contain numerous figures and tables, including income and asset requirements, subscription scores, and the number of units supplied by housing type. This made it difficult to accurately understand the information through audio alone.
LH expects the electronic Braille service to enable people with visual impairments to review subscription requirements independently and decide whether to apply. It is also expected to reduce the risk of information exposure, as users will no longer need to ask others to read aloud content containing personal information, such as financial assets and family relationships.
An LH official said, “We will continue to carefully identify information gaps and improve the system so that everyone can access housing subscription information without difficulty.”
