Han Byung-do: "Cho Hee-dae must promptly resubmit a nominee from among the recommendation committee's candidates"

gk [Financial News] Han Byung-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, urged Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae on the 8th to promptly resubmit a nominee for the next Supreme Court justice from among the candidates selected by the Supreme Court Justice Nomination Recommendation Committee. At a floor leadership meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Han pressed Cho, saying, "The more the chief justice drags out the process by invoking his authority and justification, the more trials are delayed, and the resulting harm falls entirely on the people." He added, "Chief Justice Cho must promptly proceed with resubmitting a nominee from among the candidates already recommended by the committee."
He pointed out, "With Supreme Court Justice Lee Heung-gu retiring yesterday (the 7th), two Supreme Court justice seats became vacant at the same time." He added, "The Supreme Court's Third Division cannot even meet the quorum required to hear cases, leaving it in a position where it must transfer justices from other divisions."
He continued, "The vacancies could also disrupt the operation of the Supreme Court's full bench, which handles major cases, including the three major allegations involving Kim Keon Hee and the insurrection cases involving former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min." He argued, "They could become the biggest beneficiaries of the shortage of Supreme Court justices."
Han said, "Even so, Chief Justice Cho has yet to provide any response to Cheong Wa Dae's request for a resubmission." He continued, "After delaying the nomination for more than six months and then unexpectedly submitting in writing a nominee who had not been agreed upon, he is now delaying the resubmission as well. The chief justice's authority to nominate was not granted to privatize the judiciary."
