[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung, who is on a state visit to France, met Korean filmmakers in Saint-Paul-de-Vence after attending the Lumière Summit, an international summit on the film and video industry.
On July 7 (local time), President Lee attended A Conversation with Filmmakers in the boutique room of Fondation Maeght, where the Lumière Summit was being held.
The event was attended by director Lee Chang-dong, who directed *Peppermint Candy* and *Oasis*, and director July Jung, who directed *Dora* and *Next Sohee*, as well as actors Sul Kyung-gu, Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Do-yeon. KIMMINGEE, Netflix's vice president overseeing content for the Asia-Pacific region, also attended.
President Lee said, "In less than 100 years, the film industry has grown to a level that stands out worldwide." He added, "No country has developed its free political environment and democracy—which are the foundation and roots of culture and the arts—to this extent."
At the same time, he noted, "I do have some concerns about South Korea's film industry. The fruit seems to have grown very abundantly, but the problem is that all the small trees and grass underneath appear to have died, leaving only a few large old trees. I worry about how long these old trees can survive." He stressed, "We need an ecosystem in which small trees can continue to grow."
President Lee received policy proposals from the participants and discussed directions for future development with them.
Director Lee Chang-dong pointed out that investment in the film industry had contracted. He proposed revitalizing investment by expanding tax benefits for individuals and private capital investing in films.
In response, President Lee said, "I will return and ask them to begin reviewing the policy immediately." He added, "I will let you know the results later."
After the meeting, President Lee said, "My wife told me to make sure I got a photo," and was seen taking selfies with participants, including actors Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu and Kim Do-yeon.
Meanwhile, *Possible Love*, directed by Lee Chang-dong, was invited to this year's Venice International Film Festival, while *Dora*, directed by July Jung, was invited to the Cannes Film Festival. Actors Sul Kyung-gu and Jeon Do-yeon appear in *Possible Love*, while Kim Do-yeon appears in *Dora*.
