[Financial News] LIGHTRON FIBER-OPTIC DEVICES, a company specializing in optical communications, is accelerating the localization of 50G-class optical transceivers, a key component of next-generation 6G mobile networks. Notably, the company secured purchase orders and demand confirmation letters from major customers during the development stage, increasing the likelihood that development will lead to actual supply.
LIGHTRON FIBER-OPTIC DEVICES said on the 7th that it had been selected as a participating institution in the Optical Communications Component Commercialization Project for Intelligent Information Networks, led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and administered by the National Information Society Agency (NIA).
Under the project led by the Hanyang University ERICA Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, LIGHTRON FIBER-OPTIC DEVICES is responsible for developing and commercializing a 50GBASE-BR30 SFP56 BiDi optical transceiver for 6G fronthaul networks. The product offers approximately twice the bandwidth of existing 25G interfaces.
The transceiver applies BiDi technology, which separates transmission and reception wavelengths over a single optical fiber, and uses 4-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) to target transmission distances of up to 30 km. It is a key optical component for addressing rising data traffic as networks transition to 5G-Advanced and 6G.
The project’s key feature is that it has secured a commercialization pathway beyond technology development. Before beginning development, LIGHTRON FIBER-OPTIC DEVICES obtained purchase orders and demand confirmation letters from major customers. After completing development and verification by accredited testing institutions, the company plans to pursue supply to communications equipment manufacturers and telecommunications operators in South Korea and overseas.
An industry official noted, "For next-generation optical communications components, it is more important that the technology be adopted in actual communications equipment and lead to mass production than that it simply be developed." The official added, "Securing customer demand in advance could help accelerate commercialization after localization."
Meanwhile, LIGHTRON FIBER-OPTIC DEVICES also participated in the NIA optical communications component commercialization project last year and received a score of 92 in its final performance evaluation, earning the highest rating, “Very Excellent.” With its selection this year, the company is participating in a government optical communications component commercialization project for the second consecutive year.
A LIGHTRON FIBER-OPTIC DEVICES official added, "We will expand into 6G the optical transceiver design and manufacturing capabilities we have accumulated through 4G LTE and 5G." The official continued, "Alongside the commercialization of 50G BiDi, we plan to broaden our business base into areas such as optical communications for the defense industry."
