Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo’s ‘Descendants of the Sun’ to Be Remade as an Indonesian Film

[Financial News] The hit Korean drama ‘Descendants of the Sun’ is being remade as a theatrical film in Indonesia.
Next Entertainment World (NEW) announced on the 7th that its first self-produced drama, ‘Descendants of the Sun,’ which marks its 10th anniversary since airing, is being adapted into an Indonesian film tentatively titled ‘Descendants of the Sun: Indonesia.’ NEW is participating in the project from the planning stage through co-production, marking the first time a Korean drama is being made into a film overseas.
The original series, starring Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, is a melodrama about soldiers and doctors who dream of love and success in the extreme conditions of an unfamiliar land. When it aired in 2016, it recorded a peak viewership rating of 38.8%.
The film will add Indonesian sensibilities and settings to the original story. NEW will participate across the production process, including planning and production. NEW’s film ‘Miracle in Cell No. 7’ was also remade in Indonesia and later developed into a sequel and an animated film.
Hanung Bramantyo, who directed the successful Indonesian remake of ‘Miracle in Cell No. 7,’ will direct the film. Bramantyo has won the Best Director award at the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) twice.
Reza Rahadian Matulessy and Dian Sastrowardoyo will star in the leading roles. Rahadian, who previously served as chairman of the Indonesian Film Festival, became one of Indonesia’s most acclaimed actors after playing a former president. Sastrowardoyo became known to global audiences through the Netflix series ‘Cigarette Girl.’
‘Descendants of the Sun: Indonesia,’ currently in post-production, will be released in Indonesia next year. Domestic distribution and release in South Korea will be handled by CONTENTS PANDA, NEW’s content distribution affiliate.
