18 Mayors and County Heads of Gangwon Gather for First Regular Meeting of Ninth Popularly Elected Term

【Financial News, Jeongseon = Kim Ki-seop】The mayors and county heads of Gangwon gathered to discuss regional issues.
The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Mayors and County Heads Council held the first regular meeting of the first year of the ninth popularly elected term at the High1 Grand Hotel Main Tower in Jeongseon County on the 7th. The meeting included a briefing on the results of the joint chairpersons' meeting of the Korea Mayors, County Heads and District Heads Council held in Seoul on June 16, as well as the status of proposals submitted at the council's regular meeting in Yeongwol County on February 4.
The council discussed 15 agenda items at the regular meeting, including improvements to the allocation system for the Han River Watershed Management Fund, the adjustment of water-use charges to reflect current conditions, easing restrictions on recipients of hometown love donations to encourage residents to participate in regional development, and joint responses to reductions in local allocation tax resulting from the establishment of a future response fund. It also promoted 17 major city- and county-level events, including the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Chuncheon, the Wonju Two Days Walk, and the Gangneung ITS World Congress in 2026.
The council also elected its first-term officers for the ninth popularly elected term. Choi Seung-joon, head of Jeongseon County, was elected chair, while Lee Sang-ho, mayor of Taebaek City, was elected vice chair. The next regular meeting is scheduled to take place in Gangneung in October, in conjunction with the Gangneung ITS World Congress.
Kim Dong-il, interim chair of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Mayors and County Heads Council and head of Cheorwon County, said, "It was an opportunity for the cities and counties to rely on one another and confirm the potential for cooperation and solidarity." He added, "I hope the cities and counties that have launched their ninth popularly elected term will work together to create the fruits of growth and shared prosperity."
