‘Korea Street’ Opens in Central Santiago, Chile

[Financial News] A road bearing a name symbolizing Korea has been newly established in a major Korean commercial district in Santiago, the capital of Chile.
On the 6th (local time), the South Korean Embassy in Chile announced that part of the Patronato area in Santiago’s Recoleta district had been designated “Korea Street (Calle Republica de Corea),” with an official proclamation ceremony held on the 4th, local time.
The establishment of Korea Street marks the second official Korean-related place name in Chile, following Seoul Street, which was created in 2022 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Chile.
Patronato, where the designated section is located, is one of Santiago’s major commercial districts, with a concentration of Korean-owned businesses such as restaurants and supermarkets. It is regarded as a central hub of the local Korean community’s economic and social life.
South Korean Ambassador to Chile Kim Hak-jae said, “Korea Street is the fruit of the Korean community’s own efforts after nearly half a century of hard work on this land.” He added, “As we approach the 50th anniversary of Korean immigration in 2028, I will actively support its development into a source of pride for the Korean community and a space where the peoples of both countries can engage in meaningful exchange.”
