[Financial News] Donald Trump’s approval rating for his job performance has continued to decline ahead of the United States midterm elections in November.
A poll of voters conducted on the 6th local time by the British business newspaper Financial Times (FT) in collaboration with polling firm Focaldata found that Trump’s job approval rating stood at 33%. That was down 3 percentage points from the previous month’s survey.
Voter dissatisfaction with economic conditions and high prices was cited as the main reason for the decline. About two-thirds of respondents said the United States economy was heading in the wrong direction. In addition, 57% said they had become financially worse off since the Trump administration took office, up 4 percentage points from the previous month.
Signs of defections among the Republican Party’s core supporters have also emerged. FT reported that 53% of Republican voters said they approved of Trump’s job performance and economic policies, a drop of nearly 8 percentage points in just one month.
The decline in approval is expected to be a major setback for the Republican Party as it seeks to retain majority control of both chambers of Congress. Forty-six percent of respondents said Trump was having a negative impact on Republican candidates running in the midterm elections. In particular, 47% of independent voters said they were less likely to vote for candidates endorsed by Trump.
The survey was conducted online among 1,914 registered voters across the United States from August 28 to September 1, and had a margin of error of ±2.6 percentage points.
