Seoul Metropolitan Government Launches Special Inspections of Food Origins and Hygiene Ahead of Chuseok

[Financial News] The Special Judicial Police Bureau for Citizens' Livelihood under the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 7th that it will conduct intensive inspections of country-of-origin labeling and food hygiene-related illegal activities involving Korean beef and pork sold online and at traditional markets, as well as manufacturers and sellers of foods in high demand during the holiday season. The inspections were organized to prevent businesses from taking advantage of price fluctuations ahead of Chuseok by misrepresenting low-priced imported products as domestic products, as well as to prevent food hygiene incidents that are more likely to occur during the holiday peak season. This year, food safety management is considered particularly important because Chuseok falls earlier than usual and high temperatures are continuing.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to purchase Korean beef and pork sold online and at traditional markets and commission genetic testing by the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment to verify their origins. It will also conduct on-site inspections of traditional markets, meat product retailers, and businesses that manufacture and sell food on-site. Inspectors will check country-of-origin labeling, hygienic food handling, and whether products past their use-by dates are being distributed or sold.
The inspections will focus in particular on food safety violations that may occur ahead of the holiday, such as storing LA galbi (LA-style grilled beef short ribs), which requires frozen storage, at room temperature, or handling ingredients for ritual and banquet savory Korean pancakes in an unhygienic manner.
If illegal activities are confirmed, the authorities will initiate criminal proceedings in accordance with relevant laws. Cases subject to administrative measures, including business suspension and administrative fines, will be referred to the relevant autonomous district for action.
