Uninterrupted Service Even at a Packed Fireworks Festival: KT Applies 5G Network Slicing

[Financial News] KT said on the 6th that it applied network slicing at the Seoul International Fireworks Festival 2026 to support stable communications for wireless CCTV cameras and emergency-contact devices. The festival took place on the 5th around Yeouido and Ichon Hangang Park.
At events that draw large crowds, surging traffic can delay data transmission or cause communications disruptions. Network slicing is a technology that divides a single physical communications network into multiple virtual networks according to their purposes. It enables dedicated communications environments for specific services, separate from general users’ data traffic.
Network slicing is a core technology implemented in a 5G SA environment, where both the core network and base stations are built exclusively for 5G. KT is the only one of South Korea’s three mobile carriers operating a commercial 5G SA network.
KT operated 25 wireless CCTV cameras using network slicing around Yeouido and Ichon Hangang Park, transmitting on-site footage to the integrated control room in real time. It also provided safety personnel with 10 emergency-contact devices to help manage visitor flows and respond to emergencies. These devices likewise maintained stable communications through the sliced network. KT explained that the system enabled the integrated control room to monitor crowd density in key areas and on-site conditions through live video, without building a separate dedicated line.
KT plans to expand the application of network slicing to large-scale events, industrial sites, public safety, and other areas requiring stable communications infrastructure. It is also considering ways to offer customized network slicing services to businesses and individual subscribers.
Oh Taek-gyun, executive director and head of the Network Strategy Division at KT’s Network Business Unit, said, "We will continue to develop customized network services tailored to the needs of our customers and industrial sites."
