6 out of 10 teachers use generative AI... 70.5% of high school teachers

[Financial News] It was found that more than 6 out of 10 elementary, middle, and high school teachers utilize Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) in their classes and assessments. Among high school teachers, more than 7 out of 10 answered that they use Generative AI.
According to the 6th issue of 'KICE Education Data Talk Talk,' published by KICE on the 6th, a survey of 1,659 elementary and secondary school teachers revealed that 62.9% of respondents are utilizing Generative AI in their classes and assessments. By school level, high schools showed the highest rate at 70.5%, followed by middle schools at 65.3% and elementary schools at 56.8%. The utilization rate of Generative AI was found to be higher as the school level increased.
In the instructional design process, many respondents indicated that Generative AI is effective in planning classes and assessments. The highest percentage (76.0%) was found to be effective in "generating ideas for class topics and assessment plans." This was followed by "information retrieval, such as questions and answers regarding learning content" at 75.1%, and "suggesting components or procedures for specific activities for teaching and learning" at 71.7%. This suggests that its effectiveness was highly evaluated in the process of conceiving classes, finding necessary information, and structuring teaching and learning activities.
65.9% of respondents answered that 'generating ideas for sample sentences regarding student behavioral characteristics and comprehensive opinions' and 64.8% for 'generating teaching and learning materials and student activity sheets' were effective. 'Generating assessment tools, items, and scoring rubrics' also exceeded half at 52.2%. This demonstrates that Generative AI is being utilized not only for class preparation but also for creating assessment-related materials.
In contrast, the perceived effectiveness of items related to student assessment and learning support was lower. The percentage of respondents who answered that 'grading assistance using rubrics' was effective was 32.6%, while 'personalized learning support based on student assessment results' was 37.7%, and 'providing feedback on student learning activities' was 47.4%. The use of Generative AI was not perceived as equally effective across all teaching and assessment processes.
By subject, the percentage of respondents who answered that they utilize Generative AI in classes and assessments was highest in Information and Computer Science at 75.7%. This was followed by Science at 68.3%, English at 67.2%, Practical Arts, Technology, and Home Economics at 67.2%, Korean Language at 62.5%, Arts and Physical Education at 60.1%, and Social Studies, History, Moral Education, and Ethics at 57.7%. Mathematics was the lowest at 50.5%, but more than half of teachers in all subjects answered that they utilize Generative AI.
