Gangneung Reviews Strategy to Attract Public Institutions, Plans to Launch Citizen-Wide Task Force

【Financial News Gangneung = Reporter Kim Ki-seop】Gangneung is reviewing its strategy to attract public institutions and mobilizing citizens ahead of the government’s second round of public-institution relocations.
According to Gangneung on the sixth, the city held a meeting of its Public Institution Attraction Committee on the fourth at the situation room on the eighth floor of City Hall. The committee reviewed progress on the attraction campaign and discussed strategies for responding going forward. Established on August 24 with Gangneung Vice Mayor Kim Man-ho as its chair, the committee consists of 15 members with expertise and experience in related fields. It was formed to respond proactively to the government’s second round of relocations and systematically pursue the attraction of public institutions.
The meeting covered developments in the government’s second round of public-institution relocations and Gangneung’s strategy for attracting institutions. Participants also reviewed the institutions being targeted and progress made so far. In particular, they decided to establish a citizen-wide task force to consolidate the city’s efforts to attract public institutions.
The citizen-wide task force will be jointly led by the Gangneung mayor and a private-sector leader, with civic groups and experts participating through the attraction committee. It will operate in two divisions: external cooperation, which will handle public outreach, and planning and strategy, which will develop strategies. The city also plans to comprehensively review target institutions, including those identified independently by Gangneung, and establish priorities through committee discussions. These findings will serve as foundational data for developing response strategies.
Gangneung plans to hold the citizen-wide task force’s launch ceremony and an attraction resolution rally this month. The events will build public support for attracting institutions and include the adoption of a resolution, while the city also plans to submit proposals to central government ministries and related agencies. In addition, Gangneung will strengthen a joint response system among cities and counties in the Yeongdong region to expand regional solidarity and cooperation.
Gangneung Mayor Kim Jung-nam said, "Following the establishment of the attraction committee chaired by the vice mayor, we have now formed a citizen-wide task force to bring together the strength of civic society and experts." He added, "We will join hands with cities and counties in the Yeongdong region and concentrate our administrative capabilities so that Gangneung is recognized as the optimal destination for the government’s second round of public-institution relocations."
