[Financial News] A high-ranking Iranian government official has warned that if South Korea begins intervening in the Strait of Hormuz, it will be considered participation in a war. The warning came as Cheong Wa Dae reviews whether to provide military support in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Al Mayadeen, a pro-Hezbollah media outlet in Lebanon, on the 4th (local time), a senior Iranian security and political official asserted, "South Korea must not yield to U.S. pressure to cooperate with illegal United States military operations."
The senior official urged, "South Korea must not sacrifice its interests and reputation for the sake of the aggressive policies of the United States that undermine security and stability," adding, "South Korea is well aware that the fundamental cause of instability in the Strait of Hormuz is the aggressive actions of the United States and Israel, and must not overlook this."
Iran also warned, "If South Korea takes action against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran will consider it direct military aggression against Iran and participation in a war."
In particular, the official emphasized, "We will not stand idly by regarding any conspiracy to commit crimes that infringe upon the Iranian people and their rights," adding, "It is impossible to restore regional security as long as the illegal intervention of the United States, the blockade of Iran, and economic warfare against Iran continue."
Fars News Agency, citing Al Mayadeen in reporting the official's remarks, added, "The South Korean presidential office stated that nothing has yet been decided regarding United States President Donald Trump's pressure to participate in a war against Iran, but said that a 'search and rescue unit' could be deployed to the Strait of Hormuz."
On the 4th, Cheong Wa Dae stated that it was reviewing various options regarding whether troops could be deployed overseas as a means of making a military contribution to the Strait of Hormuz, saying, "We may be able to act within a scope that does not significantly impair our readiness posture on the Korean Peninsula."
