[Financial News] Singer Geuri (real name: Kim Dong-hyeon) personally addressed allegations that he was excluded from his cohort during his Republic of Korea Marine Corps service, bringing fellow Marines with him to clarify the matter.
On the 4th, Geuri released a video on his YouTube channel 'Kim Geuri' titled 'I Will Personally Address the Allegations So Far.'
In the video, Geuri responded to various allegations surrounding him.
He said, "People around me kept sending me things, asking, 'Was there some problem in the Marine Corps?' There were quite a lot of hate comments on my Marine Corps videos." He added, "South Korea must be the only country where you still see hate comments even after completing your military service."
He continued, "Of course, I didn't join the Marine Corps to receive positive comments, but there were so many comments making a fuss even after I came back. So I'm going to read them." He then read malicious comments posted on his Marine Corps-related videos. Some claimed that Geuri had been excluded from training or subjected to 'cohort exclusion' during his service.
Geuri said, "Rather than explaining it myself, I brought in Marines. I brought in my peers, seniors, juniors, and even the most senior person." He then invited fellow Marines to appear, adding, "If I hadn't done well during my military service, would I have made it out?"
Responding to a comment claiming that he 'did not participate in training while serving at division headquarters,' he explained, "First of all, ours was not division headquarters but brigade headquarters." He added, "There was no regular training to begin with; it was a unit focused mainly on duty assignments." He continued, "There were exercises such as the Homeland Defense Exercise, snow-removal training, and artillery firing exercises," adding, "I participated in every training exercise that was held."
A fellow Marine who had been in the same training battalion education company as Geuri said, "Hyung Geuri was a legend during training." He added, "Wherever I went—to this training ground or that one—he was always there, so I thought, 'They aren't giving him special treatment.'"
Geuri's senior Marine addressed the 'cohort exclusion' allegations, saying, "After seeing Geuri hyung arrive, I thought our unit did not practice cohort exclusion." He added, "The seniors also took good care of him."
Geuri recalled, "I was the only person there whose face was known." He continued, "It became a major issue, and I had talked a lot about it on television before enlisting. So I remember being pushed especially hard because if I caused a problem there, it could also damage the Marine Corps' image."
Meanwhile, Geuri began appearing on television with his father, broadcaster Kim Gu-ra, in 2006. He became known to the public through appearances on various entertainment programs. In 2015, he signed an exclusive contract with Brand New Music and officially debuted as a singer.
He enlisted in July 2024 and served on active duty in the artillery brigade of the 2nd Marine Division. He completed his service and was discharged in January this year. During his service, he was selected as an exemplary Marine and received a commendation.
