Turning Everyday Fabric in Rwanda into a Learning Tool: ChildFund Korea’s “Learning Kitenge” Campaign

[Financial News] ChildFund Korea, a specialized child welfare organization, is conducting its “Learning Kitenge” campaign to help young children in Rwanda naturally encounter learning and play in their daily lives.
According to ChildFund Korea on the 5th, Kitenge is a fabric used in Rwandan households for clothing, baby wraps, curtains and blankets. The campaign incorporates early-childhood educational elements—including the alphabet, words, numbers, basic mathematics and emotional expression—into the fabric so it can be used in everyday life.
The fabric is designed for ordinary use as a wrap or as clothing, curtains and blankets. When learning is needed, it can be spread out so children can look at the illustrations, learn letters and words, count numbers, and talk about emotions.
Rather than creating separate educational spaces or providing teaching materials, the campaign uses household items already available at home as a medium for learning. This approach expands learning opportunities by encouraging young children and caregivers to interact in environments where educational spaces and materials are limited.
ChildFund Korea consulted the Korean Association for Early Childhood Teacher Education and observed how children in Rwanda looked at, unfolded and used Kitenge to develop the educational content and usage methods. The design preserves Kitenge’s distinctive colors and patterns while encouraging children to discover educational elements through play. ChildFund Korea also collaborated with domestic pattern-specialty brand dropdropdrop.
The donations raised will be used to prioritize the provision of Kitenge and educational content to households with young children and ECD centers in Rwanda. Based on this initiative, ChildFund Korea plans to expand its programs to reflect the everyday cultures and educational environments of other regions in Africa.
ChildFund Korea has continued its overseas child education support programs since 1995. In Rwanda, it has established ECD centers and home-based childcare centers and supported their operation, working to ensure that young children receive care and education in safe environments.
Hwang Young-ki, chairman of ChildFund Korea, said, "Simply unfolding the Kitenge that has wrapped children can turn their everyday lives into places of learning and play anytime and anywhere." He added, "Starting with Rwanda, we will expand our support across Africa so that children can naturally enjoy educational opportunities in their daily lives."
