[Financial News] A three-year-old boy died while napping at a daycare center in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province.
Police and fire authorities said that at 2:52 p.m. on the fourth, they received a report that "a child who was napping is not breathing" at a daycare center in Seowon-gu, Cheongju.
A daycare teacher went to check on Boy A after he failed to wake up even after nap time had ended and found that he was not breathing. Boy A was reportedly lying face down on the floor at the time.
Boy A was taken to a hospital by the 119 Emergency Medical Service while in cardiac arrest, but ultimately died.
Boy A had eaten lunch and began napping at around 1 p.m. He was reportedly in generally good health and had no known underlying conditions. So far, no external injuries or signs of abuse have been identified.
Under the Infant and Child Care Act and related safety-management standards, daycare teachers are required to continuously monitor children during sleep. If an investigation establishes that the teacher neglected this duty or delayed emergency measures after detecting signs of distress, charges of death resulting from professional negligence could be brought.
Police plan to request an autopsy by the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of Boy A's death. They will also investigate the circumstances of the incident by questioning daycare personnel and analyzing internal CCTV footage.
