Xi Jinping Expected to Bring Chinese Business Delegation to the United States for the First Time in 11 Years

[Financial News] Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is scheduled to visit the United States on the 24th (local time), is reportedly bringing a large delegation of business leaders with him. It will be the first time in about 11 years that Xi has traveled to the United States with Chinese business executives.
Foreign media outlets, including India’s Firstpost, reported on the 4th, citing two sources familiar with the matter. The names of the business executives accompanying Xi have not yet been confirmed.
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on the 2nd, "The president of China is scheduled to visit on the 24th," adding, "It’s something I’m really looking forward to, and I’m very pleased to be inviting him." He continued, "We have a lot of good things to discuss. Very, very productive things to discuss with Xi Jinping."
Xi’s visit to the United States will come about three years after his previous visit in November 2023. It will also be his first trip to Washington, D.C., since the Nuclear Security Summit in April 2016. Trump, who visited China in May, said during that trip that he had invited Xi to the White House on September 24. He mentioned the same date again in July.
Xi typically travels abroad alone. The last time he visited the United States with a delegation of business leaders was in 2015. During that trip, he was accompanied by Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba Group; Ma Huateng, founder of Tencent Holdings; and executives from Bank of China and state-owned enterprises.
One source explained that the business delegation was intended to demonstrate China’s willingness to support investment in the United States and commercial ties with the country. The source also speculated that the delegation could help deliver some economic gains to Trump ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November.
During his 2015 visit to the United States, Xi met with executives of American technology companies, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. At the same time, China signed a $38 billion contract to purchase 300 aircraft from Boeing.
Scott Kennedy, a senior adviser on Chinese business and economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), assessed the report by saying, "China appears ready to include business leaders in the delegation and give them a more active role." He added, "The participation of business leaders could play a genuinely valuable role."
