Gwangju Metropolitan City Pledges to Expand Gender Equality in Everyday Life

【Financial News, Muan = Hwang Tae-jong】The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City (Gwangju Metropolitan City) held the 2026 Gender Equality Week ceremony at the Kim Dae-jung Auditorium of the Muan Government Complex on the 4th under the theme "Jeonnam-Gwangju United Through Equality for All," pledging to expand a culture of gender equality in everyday life.
More than 500 people attended the ceremony, including Min Hyung-bae, mayor of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City; Song Hyung-gon, speaker of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Council; Hwang Seong-hwan, deputy superintendent of the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education; and representatives of women’s and family-related institutions and organizations, as well as local residents.
The event began with a pre-ceremony performance by the Kkumgreen Orchestra and continued with awards for contributors to gender equality, commemorative and congratulatory remarks, a performance promoting a culture of gender equality, a pledge ceremony with citizens, and a commemorative photo session.
In his commemorative remarks, Mayor Min Hyung-bae emphasized, "We will establish an officer in charge of gender equality policy directly under the deputy mayor and make every effort to advance gender equality policies." He added, "We will carefully fill gaps in care services and provide thoughtful support for victims of violence as they recover their everyday lives."
At the awards ceremony, commendations were presented to individuals who contributed to promoting gender equality, achieving work-life balance, and creating women-friendly cities, recognizing their efforts to expand a culture of gender equality in the local community.
For the cultural performance, the theater company Balgeunbam presented "Moments of Equality Completed by Everyone," a multiscreen omnibus combining a theater video, short-form videos, and a live theatrical performance. The production explored the prejudices and inconveniences citizens encounter regarding gender equality in everyday life and conveyed the message that gender equality is not something special or difficult, but a value created together in daily life.
The short-form video was produced based on winning entries from a contest organized by the Jeonnam Women and Family Foundation for citizens to mark Gender Equality Week.
Before the ceremony, five interactive booths were operated at Yun Seon-do Hall, covering a gender-equal workplace challenge, a gender sensitivity assessment, work-life balance, career continuity, and violence prevention. The booths allowed citizens to experience the meaning of gender equality in everyday life in an easy and engaging way.
Meanwhile, this year’s Gender Equality Week events will continue through the 19th. On the 9th, a women’s employment forum titled "Introducing an Employment Equality Disclosure System: What Should We Do?" and a career development concert titled "Finding Myself, Connecting My Dreams," featuring Professor Heo Tae-gyun, will be held at the Mokpo Shangria Beach Hotel.
On the 19th, a citizen-participation cultural festival will be held at the Expo Digital Gallery (EDG) at the Yeosu World Expo Site.
