[Financial News] The Korea Real Estate Board (KREB) is supporting the spread of environmental, social, and transparent management (ESG) financial products that link buildings’ greenhouse-gas emissions and energy consumption to financial benefits.
KREB said on the 4th that it held a briefing session on ESG financial support services for Kyongnam Bank, Korea Technology Finance Corporation (KOTEC), Nonghyup Bank, Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK), and Bank of Hope at the KBF building in Seoul.
ESG financial products offer benefits such as preferential interest rates when buildings reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions or energy consumption. KREB plans to support financial institutions in launching related products by using its building-energy database (DB) and to expand its cooperation network.
The building-energy database is an integrated collection of data established under the Green Buildings Construction Support Act. By linking building information with energy-use data held by energy suppliers, it enables the energy consumption status of individual buildings to be identified.
The briefing introduced the structure of the building-energy database, the status of financial products launched using the data, and ESG financial support services. The participating institutions also discussed ways to make further use of the data in the financial sector.
KREB has signed ESG financial-support business cooperation agreements with Shinhan Bank in September 2023, the Korea Credit Guarantee Fund (KODIT) in December 2023, Standard Chartered Bank Korea in September 2024, and iM Bank in August 2026. Based on these agreements, it is supporting the launch of private-sector financial products that use the building-energy database.
