Only About 500 Spoon-billed Sandpipers Remain Worldwide; Species Returns to Gochang County for Fourth Straight Year

【Financial News Gochang County = Kang In】 A critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper, of which only about 500 individuals remain worldwide, has been found in Gochang County, North Jeolla Province.
Gochang tidal flats boast a pristine environment designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
According to Gochang County on the 4th, a Spoon-billed Sandpiper, classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and designated as a Class I endangered wildlife species in South Korea, has been observed on the Gochang tidal flats for four consecutive years.
The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is a small sandpiper with a distinctive bill that breeds in Russia’s Far East and on the Kamchatka Peninsula. It is a migratory bird that travels to Southeast Asia for the winter and is known to rest on the west coast of Korea during its spring and autumn migrations.
A Gochang County official said, "We will preserve the habitat of the Gochang tidal flats and develop this UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, through various birdwatching programs and other initiatives, so that people and nature can coexist."
