Justice Minister Nominee Kim Seung-won Caught Driving Under the Influence Shortly After Resigning as Judge, Fined 700,000 Won

[Financial News] Kim Seung-won, nominee for justice minister, was reportedly caught driving under the influence shortly after resigning as a judge and was sentenced to pay a fine.
According to a report by No Cut News on the 3rd, citing materials from the office of Park Soo-min of the People Power Party, Kim was fined 700,000 won by Suwon District Court in July 2008 for driving under the influence.
Kim served as a judge at Suwon District Court from February 2006 to February 2008. Just five months after stepping down from the bench, he was punished for driving under the influence by the very court where he had worked.
Kim was nominated on August 30 to succeed former Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho.
Kang Hoon-sik, chief of the Office of the President, introduced Kim by saying, "As a former judge and a two-term lawmaker who served as secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly, he understands the purpose of reforming the criminal justice system more deeply than anyone."
Immediately after his nomination, Kim wrote on Facebook, "As a judge and lawyer, I worked to protect the rights and human rights of the people, and in the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, I have worked with my eyes fixed solely on the people and justice." He added, "I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility."
