Cheong Wa Dae Denies Report That South Korea Had Decided in Principle to Deploy Troops to Strait of Hormuz, Saying It Is “Inaccurate”

[Financial News] Cheong Wa Dae on the 3rd denied reports by some media outlets that the South Korean government had decided in principle to deploy troops to the Strait of Hormuz, saying they were “inaccurate.”
A Cheong Wa Dae official made the statement in response to a question about the reports, saying, “No decision has been made on the matter.”
The official reiterated the government’s existing position, saying, “Our government has been closely discussing with the international community practical ways to contribute to the swift restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and to peace and stability in the Middle East.”
Earlier, one media outlet reported that the South Korean government had tentatively taken a positive position on deploying troops to the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East and was reviewing the details in preparation for submitting a troop-deployment consent bill to the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea in the near future.
As United States President Donald Trump has been calling on South Korea to contribute to efforts in the Strait of Hormuz, Cheong Wa Dae also stated on the 1st, “The government has continued discussions with the international community, including the United States, on ways to cooperate. It is reviewing practical and military ways to contribute to freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, taking into comprehensive consideration the readiness posture on the Korean Peninsula and domestic legal procedures, among other factors.”
