[Financial News] Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Finance and Economy Koo Yun-cheol described Lee Hyoung-il, who has been nominated as his successor, as "a very capable person."
Koo Yun-cheol made the remarks about Lee Hyoung-il while speaking with reporters at Incheon International Airport after returning to South Korea on the 3rd from the Group of Twenty (G20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting held in Asheville, the United States.
Koo Yun-cheol said, "Overall, (Lee Hyoung-il) understands the philosophy of the Lee Jae-myung administration well," adding, "He will coordinate and respond to all policies effectively."
After arriving at Incheon International Airport on the 30th of last month, Koo Yun-cheol learned that he was included among the officials to be replaced in the Cabinet reshuffle and canceled his overseas schedule, but later departed again.
He also shared his thoughts on attending the G20 meeting. Koo Yun-cheol said, "The G20 countries assessed South Korea's economic fundamentals as very strong."
He said, "Officials from Italy asked, 'Oil prices are rising, so how did you manage them?' I explained, 'We set a price ceiling.' When they asked, 'Then shouldn't you provide subsidies?' I replied, 'We can manage it sufficiently even while providing subsidies,' and I could sense that they were very envious of South Korea."
He added, "I felt that South Korea's standing in the international community is rising."
