[Financial News] Hollywood actor Ansel Elgort sparked online controversy after attending an official event in Seoul dressed in a yukata, a traditional Japanese garment.
Ansel Elgort appeared at an event held in Hannam-dong, Seoul, on the 2nd.
At the event, he stood at the photo wall wearing a yukata. His choice to wear a traditional Japanese outfit at an official event held in South Korea prompted an ongoing online debate over its appropriateness.
Some users criticized the outfit as an imprudent choice, considering the venue and nature of the event. Others said he should have taken the cultural context into account, given that it was an official engagement held in South Korea.
Users posted comments such as "What was he thinking at an official event?" "Didn't his stylist get it wrong?" "It doesn't look like he even tried to understand the culture," and "His manners were disappointing at an international event."
Others, however, argued that it should be viewed as a personal clothing choice and that there was no need to attach excessive political or historical meaning to it.
Meanwhile, Ansel Elgort made his film debut in 2013 with *Carrie*. He later appeared in *Divergent*, *The Fault in Our Stars*, and *West Side Story*, and became known in South Korea for the 2017 film *Baby Driver*.
In 2020, controversy also arose over an allegation of sexual assault involving a minor after a woman claimed that Ansel Elgort had sexually assaulted her in 2014, when she was 17.
