“What Are You Doing at an Official Event?” Ansel Elgort Sparks Controversy Over Wearing a Japanese Yukata

[Financial News] Hollywood actor Ansel Elgort sparked online controversy after attending an official event in Seoul wearing a yukata, a traditional Japanese garment.
Ansel Elgort appeared at an event held in Hannam-dong, Seoul, on the 2nd.
At the event, he stood at the photo wall wearing a yukata. Online users continued to debate whether it was appropriate for him to choose a traditional Japanese outfit for an official event held in South Korea.
Some users criticized the choice as thoughtless, considering the venue and nature of the event. Others argued that he should have taken the cultural context into account, given that it was an official engagement held in South Korea.
Users posted comments such as, “What are you doing at an official event you were invited to?”, “Didn’t your stylist get it wrong?”, “It doesn’t even look like you’re trying to understand the culture,” and “His manners at an international event leave much to be desired.”
Others, however, said it should be viewed as a personal clothing choice and that there was no need to attach excessive political or historical meaning to it.
Meanwhile, Ansel Elgort made his film debut in 2013 with Carrie. He later appeared in Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars, and West Side Story, and became known in South Korea for the 2017 film Baby Driver.
In 2020, a woman alleged that Ansel Elgort had sexually assaulted her in 2014, when she was 17, sparking controversy over alleged sexual assault involving a minor.
