【Financial News Jeonnam-Gwangju = Reporter Hwang Tae-jong】Kimchi made in Jeonnam-Gwangju is set to target the United Kingdom after the United States.
According to Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City (Gwangju Metropolitan City) on the 3rd, a combined 1.5 tons of kimchi—including cabbage kimchi, mustard-leaf kimchi, and aged kimchi—produced by three local companies, including Bitgoeul Kimchi Agricultural Cooperative Corporation, Haedamchon, and Dasan Myeongga, had been shipped for export to Los Angeles.
The export price per kilogram was 7,000 won for cabbage kimchi and 9,000 won each for mustard-leaf kimchi and aged kimchi. The products consisted mainly of high-quality kimchi tailored to local demand for premium kimchi, with export prices relatively higher than those of standard kimchi.
Oh Young-geol, head of the Economic and Startup Bureau of Gwangju Metropolitan City, emphasized, "Jeonnam-Gwangju kimchi is a traditional Jeolla-style fermented food known for its high quality and distinctive flavor."
Gwangju Metropolitan City has been exporting kimchi, primarily to Los Angeles in the United States, since 2022 in cooperation with the World Institute of Kimchi and the Global Alliance for the Globalization of Korean Cuisine.
To target the United Kingdom market, the city plans to hold the 'Gwangju Fresh Kimjang Kimchi Tasting Event' at the University of Oxford on October 21. Using the event as an opportunity, it also plans to expand its presence across the U.S. market and begin full-scale efforts to develop the European market.
Oh Young-geol said, "We will expand our market across the Americas from Los Angeles as a base and actively develop markets in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe to enhance the global competitiveness of Jeonnam-Gwangju kimchi."
