RFTech Expands 5G Technology into Defense, Launches RF Subsidiary 'RFTC'

[Financial News]  RFTech is spinning off its 5G research and development (R&D) organization into a separate entity and developing its radio frequency (RF) business as an independent growth engine. The company’s key strategy is to expand RF technology accumulated through its communications equipment business into defense applications, including counter-drone systems.
According to the company on the 3rd, RFTech has launched RFTC, a subsidiary dedicated to 5G and defense RF technologies. The spin-off follows an organizational separation process that began in May. RFTC is expected to complete preparations for its operating structure this month and begin full-scale operations.
The key point of the spin-off is that it goes beyond simply separating the existing 5G R&D organization; it also expands the application of RF technology into the defense sector. RFTC will advance its 5G antenna and filter technologies while developing RF technologies needed for counter-drone defense systems, including detection, jamming and antenna systems.
RFTech entered the RF equipment market in 2019 by supplying 5G antenna filter units to Samsung Electronics. It later accumulated design, manufacturing and verification capabilities by supplying antenna units (AUs) and antenna filter units (AFUs) for Massive MIMO base stations.
The company plans to extend this technological foundation into next-generation communications, including 5G-Advanced and 6G, while also using it to enter the defense RF market. As demand grows for anti-drone technologies such as detection and jamming amid rising drone threats, the company’s ability to transfer communications RF technology to defense applications is expected to determine its future growth potential.
The launch of a separate entity is also expected to accelerate investment and technology development decisions. The company explained that concentrating specialized personnel and R&D resources on RF, rather than operating as an existing business division, will allow it to respond more flexibly to efforts to secure new customers and business partners.
An RFTech official said, "With the establishment of RFTC, we will develop the RF business in earnest as a future growth engine. Based on the technological capabilities secured through 5G, we will expand business opportunities in the next-generation communications and defense RF markets."
An industry official added, "RF technology accumulated in communications equipment has considerable technological overlap with defense applications such as detection and jamming. Following the launch of RFTC, the key to reassessing the RF business will be whether it can turn its existing 5G technology into actual defense contracts and revenue."
