TS Takes Lead in International Standards for Vehicle SDV Technology

[Financial News] The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) has begun leading efforts to establish international safety standards for technology that uses exterior vehicle displays or images projected onto roads to signal driving intentions to pedestrians and other vehicles.
On the 3rd, the Vehicle Safety Research Institute of TS held the kickoff meeting of the Task Force on Interactive Signaling Display (TF-ISD), which discusses communication technology between vehicles and road users for the operation of software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and future mobility environments.
TF-ISD is a dedicated working group under the International Automotive Lighting and Light Signalling Expert Group (GTB). It studies the establishment and revision of international safety standards for technologies that enable vehicles, including SDVs, to visually communicate their driving intentions to pedestrians and other road users.
As the chair country, South Korea discussed the direction of international standards and detailed agenda items with government delegations from major countries, including the United States, the European Union (EU), and China, as well as global automotive experts.
The technologies under discussion display information on exterior vehicle screens or project images onto road surfaces. They visually indicate whether a vehicle is starting, stopping, or moving, helping pedestrians and other vehicles understand its intentions intuitively.
Until now, international automotive safety standards have focused mainly on conventional lighting and signaling devices, including headlights. As SDV technology advances and mobility environments change, the scope of standards is expanding to include visual communication technologies between vehicles and road users.
TS plans to gather opinions from experts in various countries, draft international standards, and continue related discussions with the aim of eventually establishing United Nations (UN) regulations. It will also explore ways to incorporate the technological and research achievements of South Korea's SDV and mobility sectors into international standards.
Since 2015, the Vehicle Safety Research Institute has served as South Korea's representative to GTB together with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. It has researched automotive lighting technologies, including driver-assistance projection systems, and participated in discussions on establishing and revising international standards for new technologies.
TS Chairman Jung Yong-sik said, "TS will continue doing its utmost to ensure that South Korea's outstanding technologies and research capabilities are reflected in the development of international safety standards, and to create a safe transportation environment in which all road users can feel secure in the era of future mobility."
