[Financial News] A couple who stole parts from computers placed inside motel rooms has been sentenced to prison.
According to legal sources on the 3rd, the Criminal Division 6 of the Daejeon District Court, sitting as a single-judge panel, announced the previous day that it had sentenced a man in his 30s, identified as Defendant A, to two years in prison and a woman in her 40s, identified as Defendant B, to one year in prison suspended for two years and 80 hours of community service. Both were indicted on charges including special theft.
The couple was brought to trial for allegedly stealing PC components worth approximately 8 million won from motels in Daejeon, Seoul, and Incheon Metropolitan City on six occasions in total before fleeing.
After booking motel rooms, they entered the rooms and used tools they had prepared in advance to dismantle the PCs. They then stole graphics cards, memory cards, keyboards, and other components before escaping.
Separately, Defendant A was also prosecuted for repeatedly stealing cigarettes from convenience stores and other locations, as well as for obtaining 100,000 won by falsely claiming that he was selling an online game account.
Regarding Defendant A, the court ruled, "He committed many offenses using a variety of methods, and he has a prior fine for a similar crime, so he deserves severe punishment. However, we considered it in his favor that he admitted to all of the offenses and compensated some theft victims and reached settlements with them."
Regarding Defendant B, the court stated, "Although her culpability is not minor in light of the number of offenses and the methods used, we considered in her favor that, apart from a prior fine of 1 million won for fraud, she has no other criminal record."
The couple appealed the first-instance ruling.
