[Financial News] A Chinese university lecturer, Jeong Chang-seong, 31, who was arrested on suspicion of murdering a Chinese female international student who attended his class and mutilating and abandoning her body, was found to have pressured another Chinese female international student three years ago after she rejected his request to date him, saying, “I can make sure you do not graduate.”
Pressuring a Student Who Rejected His Invitation to “Have a Meal”
According to MBC on the 2nd, Jeong repeatedly and coercively approached Student A, a Chinese female international student enrolled in the master’s program in the same department, in September 2023, when he was teaching anatomy and rehabilitation therapy at a university in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province.
Jeong expressed interest in Student A at the time, but she rejected him. He continued contacting her afterward, saying, “Let’s have a meal” and “I’ll give you a gift.” When A continued to refuse, Jeong reportedly pressured her through another international student, conveying that he could “delay her graduation or prevent her from graduating.”
Student A stated, “Jeong Chang-seong told me, ‘If you have any questions while writing your thesis, come to my house.’”
University: “She Reported It to the Office of International Affairs, but There Were No Further Issues”
According to the university, a graduate student visited the Office of International Affairs in October 2023 and expressed discomfort about Jeong’s text messages. The office immediately informed the student’s academic adviser.
During a consultation with the academic adviser, the graduate student did not want additional measures or separation. The adviser summoned Jeong and issued a verbal warning. The university claims that the student made no further complaints and that there were no other notable incidents involving Jeong afterward.
Meanwhile, Jeong was arrested on the 25th of last month on suspicion of murdering Student B, a 25-year-old Chinese female international student, at his studio apartment in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, in the early hours of the 20th of last month, mutilating her body, and abandoning it in wooded areas and garbage dumps in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, and Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, among other locations.
Investigators found that after the crime, Jeong disguised himself as a woman, carried the victim’s mobile phone, and took a taxi to Dongdaegu Station. He then turned off the phone nearby, changed into his own clothes in a restroom, and returned home. The following day, he also falsely reported the victim missing to police himself. Police believe he did so to make it appear that the victim had gone missing on her own and to confuse the investigation.
Police are investigating whether there were any additional victims at the university and plan to refer Jeong to the Prosecution Service after further investigation.
