Unleashing AI on Everything from Traditional Music to Tourism... 5 Types of AI-Friendly Data Open

[Financial News] Five types of public data in the cultural sector, including information on traditional Korean music, tourism, and policy, will be opened in a format that can be used for artificial intelligence (AI) learning and service development. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) will release this data as National Key Open Data on the Public Data Portal in December.
According to the MCST on the 3rd, four institutions—the National Gugak Center, the National Library of Korea, Sejong, the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), and the Korea Culture Information Service Agency (KCISA)—are opening five types of AI and high-value public data for the first time. This project is part of the 'AI and High-Value Public Data TOP 100' opening project selected by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) for 2025.
The National Gugak Center processes digital audio and images of Korean traditional music by adding information such as genre, instruments, rhythms, and performance techniques, making them suitable for AI training. The National Library of Korea, Sejong plans to build domestic and international policy materials into question-and-answer datasets and provide customized information tailored to current issues and national tasks.
The KTO is expanding the release of nationwide tourism information in Korean and multiple languages, as well as tourism video content by region and theme. The KCISA is building 3D cultural resources, Korean traditional clothing, and traditional pattern data into a format suitable for AI learning and utilization, and is adding expert verification and ontology-based relationship information.
Although the data comes from different domains, the focus was placed on expanding the applications of AI, such as cultural content production, policy search and analysis, and multilingual tourism guidance.
The MCST also provides Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration information, which is a common communication rule for connecting AI models to external materials and tools along with data. The plan is to expand the system so that AI agents can easily connect to and utilize public data that was previously accessed and used by humans.
According to the MCST's plan, seven additional types of cultural data will be opened in 2027, which is two more than this year. The Ministry also plans to continue opening more high-value cultural data, such as comprehensive book information, museum artifact information, and movie information.
