[Financial News] A daughter-in-law who had grown tired of preparing food and cleaning up after every holiday gathering said she would not visit her in-laws this time. Her mother-in-law then opened up about feeling a sense of emptiness. Online commenters largely said it would be better to let the couple rest.
On the 31st of last month, a post titled "My Son Says He Won't Come This Holiday" was uploaded to the social media platform Threads.
The writer said her son and daughter-in-law had told her they wanted to take a break from visiting during the holiday. She said, "My daughter-in-law says she is very tired and that the two of them want to rest this time." At first, feeling disappointed, she reportedly replied, "It's a holiday, so we should at least see each other."
After a long pause, her son replied, "Mom, we wish the holidays could be a little more relaxing for us, too." The writer said she was unable to say anything more after hearing that.
The writer later reflected on how her daughter-in-law had been unable to rest during every holiday. "Thinking about it, my daughter-in-law came over every holiday and was busy preparing food and cleaning up the whole time instead of getting any rest," she said. Although she understood her daughter-in-law's position, she admitted that the thought of her son and daughter-in-law not coming left her feeling empty. She added, "When I think about the two of them not coming on the actual holiday, the house will probably feel very empty," and confessed, "I still don't know whether I should ask them to come or just leave them alone this time."
Most online users who saw the post said it would be better to let the couple rest during this holiday. One commenter wrote, "Just let them rest. If you don't want your son and daughter-in-law to fight," while another pointed out, "It's not as if we only see each other once or twice a year during the holidays like in the past. We can meet whenever we want, so I don't understand why people insist on meeting specifically during the holidays."
Some also said that holidays had become burdensome after marriage. Several commenters criticized the reality that household chores tend to fall disproportionately on daughters-in-law, saying, "I really started to hate the holidays after getting married."
